Is this person infuriatingly self-righteous and inconsiderate or frighteningly oblivious and lacking situational awareness? I only ask because I didn’t notice a cell phone when I passed them.

Probably a little of both.

Completely oblivious, up until the end when you held the high beam a little longer, the. You could tell it was intentional.

I agree, although I suspect that the percentage is skewed toward “frighteningly oblivious and lacking situational awareness”. I don’t have any facts or data to back that up; just my gut feeling.
It is amazing how many left lane hogs there are on Interstate Highways. I give them plenty of opportunity to move over, but if they stay planted in the passing lane with the right lane clear, I don’t hesitate to make a clean pass on the right... just like sm70 did.

If you had room to get over into the right lane (without cutting off the truck), then that driver had even more room. So that kinda voids out his supposed self-righteousness.
But then again, I seem to recall that your state’s left lane laws are different from mine. In Michigan, you’re required to return to the right lane after passing. But that’s not the case here, is it?

Passing on the right is completely legal if there’s space. I do it. There used to be a big problem with texting until they finally decided to make it worth points on your license now. It’s so easy to get a license around here, there’s so many who have no business behind the wheel and absolutely know nothing about what’s going on outside of their car.

It is. I had a video a month or two ago of someone getting pulled over for not doing so.

Ok, I must be thinking of a conversation I had with someone else, then.

There isn’t a lot of difference between the two choices.

In practice, no.
I’m basically wondering if they were blocking me on purpose or just had no fucking clue I was there/they were in my way illegally.

I find that most left lane hogs are completely unaware of anything happening in the world outside of their own cabin. I’m willing to bet 75% of drivers on the road do not know the left lane is for passing only.
I’m actually surprised you didn’t see a cell phone.

I think they had no clue and didn’t want to be in front of the semi.

This person should have the DL suspended until s/he takes a mandatory, in-person refresher course on how to drive.

clueless
In my experience people that do things like that have no idea what laws, or even common driving courtesies are.
And they get upset at YOU for pointing them out, if they even notice you as you pass them and they either have a phone in hand or a blank stare on their faces and white knuckles on the steering wheel.

I’d lean toward no fucking clue (or care). If it was intentional, they could have done a better job of blocking you.
Perhaps one of those clowns who sets the cruise control and NEVER EVER takes it off - so they could never get far enough in front of the semi to comfortably move over?

All four. Totally oblivious at first and a deliberate asshole by the end of it.

How do you have that much patience? I would have waited until I had 3.5 inches of free space, whipped over into the right lane and undertaken them in anger (and maybe brake checked them in retaliation if I had a particularly rough day at work).

I had friends in the car and didn’t want to start anything. Had I been alone, who knows?

To be fair, I definitely respond differently to lane hogs depending on what car I’m in. Slow car? Will probably just undertake at a reasonable pace and carry on. My Corvette? Will probably do a 3rd gear 55-100mph pull past them (and cut them off unnecessarily close).

This is also a HUGE factor. I drive less aggressively in my LX470 (which I was driving in this video) than I used to in my Audi. The Audi was much faster and much more stable at speed.

Cruise control syndrome.

Idk, my driver’s ed course never explained the left lane law. They just said maybe one time, “keep right except to pass.”
Ironically, we spent an entire day talking about how you should avoid getting a DUI. Aka, leave the scene of the accident and sober up. Cops can’t prove you were drunk the following day, and leaving the scene is cheaper than a DUI.

“infuriatingly self-righteous and inconsiderate” There are way too many people that can’t be bothered to ever get out of the left lane or change their set speed on their cruise control.

Overtake in anger, sure, but please don’t ever brake-check anyone, regardless of what they did. You could easily cause a wreck for an innocent behind them or next to them (or into you)...

I was riding with a coworker who was complaining about bad drivers, while he was doing 5 under the limit in the left lane, with several cars behind.....
